Ninth Inning Homer Stings Seahawks

ELON, N.C. – Jake Murray's full-count, two-out homer to center field in the top of the ninth was the difference as Cincinnati edged UNCW, 5-4, on Saturday at Brooks Field.

The Bearcats ran their record to 3-6 on the season and have won two of the first three games of the four-game series with the Seahawks. UNCW, meanwhile, dropped to 6-3.

UC reliever Nathan Moore (1-2) was credited with the win, retiring all three batters he faced in the bottom of the eighth. Beau Keathley notched his first save of the season.

Tanner Holen and Wyatt Stapp each had two hits and Holen drove in two.

UNCW's Kip Brandenburg held game-high honors with three hits as he extended his hitting streak to  a career-best 11 games.

Reliever Hunter Hodges (1-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing Murray's home run in the ninth. Hodges struck out five in his 3.1 innings of relief.

Up next: The series concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start.

Notes: The Seahawks were held scoreless over the final five innings of the game … Neither starter figured in the decision … Luke Gesell fanned seven and allowed four runs, but just one earned, in 5.2 innings … The UC bullpen allowed one hit and a walk over the final four innings … Both teams landed their leadoff hitter on base safely twice.
