Tayler Vitola each registered three hits, but it was not enough as UNCW dropped a pair of games against UNCG on Friday afternoon at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Seahawks, who dropped to 2-6 on the season, lost by a 9-0 margin in five innings in the opener before falling by a 13-8 count in the nightcap. UNCG, meanwhile, upped its record to 6-4.
Smith and Vitola each went 3-for-6 in the doubleheader to lead the Seahawks' 11-hit attack. Smith tallied all three of her hits in a 3-for-4 effort in the second game while Vitola went 1-for-2 in the opener before adding a 2-for-4 effort with two runs scored.
Junior
Jada Santiago added two hits and three runs batted in with a run scored.
How It Happened – Game 1: UNCG erupted for six runs in the first inning on two hits while taking advantage of four walks, a wild pitch and a hit batter. The Spartans added two runs in the second inning with a single tally in the fourth inning.
How It Happened – Game 2: After UNCW scored five runs in the fifth inning to break a 2-all tie, UNCG answered with an eight-run inning for a 10-7 lead the Spartans did not relinquish.
Notes of Interest: Vitola has hit safely in seven of the Seahawks' eight games, including the last three games in a row … The Middletown, Del., product also paces UNCW with a .440 average and 11 hits … Santiago now leads the Seahawks with seven RBI … Smith became the second UNCW player to register a three-hit effort this season.
