Baldwin Homers In Loss To Bearcats

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Cincinnati overcame a slow start to rally for a 7-4 win over UNCW on Friday at Brooks Field.

The Bearcats improved to 2-6 with the win after overcoming a 4-0 deficit after one inning of play. The Seahawks, meanwhile, slipped to 6-2 with the home loss.

UC starter Evan Shawver (1-0) earned the win for the Bearcats. Shawver struck out eight and allowed six hits over six innings. Just one of those hits came after a four—run first inning for the Seahawks. Zach Segal recorded the three-inning save for the first of his season.

Jace MeRcer led the Bearcats with two hits, including his second home run of the season. Wyatt Stapp added a bases clearing double in UC's four-run third inning.

Taber Mongero collected two hits for the Seahawks and Brooks Baldwin led off the UNCW bottom of the first with his fourth home run of the season.

Landen Roupp (0-2) took the loss for the Seahawks, lasting five innings and striking out eight.

How it happened: After staking the Seahawks to a 4-0 lead after one inning, UC got on the board with a run in the second and then grabbed a 5-4 lead with four in the third. Cole Harting opened the inning with a home to left and Stapp doubled in three runs with a two-out hit.

Notes: Kip Brandenburg pushed his hitting streak to 10 games with a first inning double … For Baldwin, it was the second time this season he led off the Seahawk first inning with a home run … UNCW reliever Bryce Cota fanned a career-high four in a career-tying three-inning stint … The teams combined to strikeout 21 times on the afternoon

Up next: The Seahawks and Bearcats will play game three of the series on Saturday with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
