WILMINGTON, North Carolina – No. 12 UNCW used a goal from sophomore
Parker Norris and three saves from sophomore
Gabriel Perrotta to post its fifth consecutive shutout with a 1-0 victory over William & Mary in Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer action at the UNCW Soccer Stadium on Saturday evening.
The win moved the Seahawks to 5-0-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the CAA while William & Mary dips to 2-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the circuit.
Norris, who scored his first goal of the season, gave the Seahawks the only marker they needed when he headed in a corner kick from senior forward
Jacob Evans.
Led by Perrotta, who posted his sixth shutout of the year, the UNCW defense limited William & Mary to a season-low four shots in the contest, including zero attempts after the intermission.
Redshirt freshman Will Stack tallied two saves in the loss for the Tribe.
Game Notes:
- The Seahawks honored their five seniors – Evans, Jonathan Gomes, Tsubasa Takada, Michael Hornsby and Alejandro Saez – before the game.
- UNCW earned its second straight win over the Tribe and is unbeaten in the last four encounters, posting a 3-0-1 record in those meetings.
- The Seahawks also stand 6-1-2 in the last nine affairs with its long-time rival … William & Mary holds a 35-9-6 all-time series advantage.
- UNCW holds a 32-18-7 record as a nationally-ranked team since the start of the 2004 season, including a 3-0-1 mark this year.
- The Seahawks have now held their opponents scoreless for the last 518 minutes, 45 seconds, dating back to their Feb. 20 victory at Charlotte … The five consecutive clean sheets are just one shy of the program record set during the 1975 season.
- UNCW has opened the season with a seven-game unbeaten streak for the first time in program history.
- Norris became the eighth different UNCW player to score a goal this season.
- Perrotta's 14 career shutouts rank sixth in program history … He also lowered his season goals against average to 0.27 and has a .909 save percentage.
