Seahawks Take Series Opener At Charleston

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Trevor Marsh banged out three hits and Landen Roupp tossed six shutout innings to help UNCW to a 6-1 win over Charleston in the Colonial Athletic Association series opener Friday at Patriots Point.

The Seahawks evened their conference record at 2-2 and improved to 13-6 overall. Charleston, meanwhile, dropped to 5-11 on the season and 2-2 in the league.

Marsh led UNCW's 11-hit attack with a career-high tying three hits, including a RBI triple in the seventh. Brooks Baldwin, Kip Brandenburg and Noah Bridges all had two hits.

Roupp (2-2) struck out six and allowed three hits and two walks before leaving the game following a weather delay in the seventh.

Joseph Mershon had three of Charleston's five hits on the evening. The Cougars broke up UNCW's shutout bid with a run on a wild pitch in the ninth.

CofC starter Ty Good (2-2) took the loss despite striking out a career-high 10. He allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits and a pair of walks in 6.2 innings.

How it happened: The Seahawks broke open a 1-0 game with two in the seventh and three more in the eighth. Marsh scored Dillon Lifrieri from first base with a triple and he scored one batter later on a sac fly by Taber Mongero. Matt Suggs hit his conference-leading sixth homer with a runner on in the eighth and Lifrieri followed with a RBI ground ball to short for the final run.

Notes: Seahawk pitchers allowed just one hit with runners on base … UNCW got its leadoff hitter on base safely four times … Brandenburg now has a 21-game hitting streak after a fourth inning single … Both teams combined for 25 strikeouts on the night.

Up next: The series continues Saturday with a 2 p.m. start.
