Series Evened As UNCW Loses To CofC, 11-8


MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – All 11 runs scored by Charleston came with two out as the Cougars evened their Colonial Athletic Association series against UNCW with an 11-8 win on Saturday at Patriots Point.

The Cougars improved to 3-2 in the league and 6-11 overall. UNCW, meanwhile, dropped to 13-7 and 2-3 in the CAA.

CofC's Harrison Hawkins collected six runs batted in on three hits, including two home runs. His grand slam in the sixth proved to be the difference maker as it game Charleston an 11-4 lead.

Four Seahawks had two hits on the game while Cole Weiss and Matt Suggs both homered.

Luke Gesell (2-2) dropped his second consecutive start, going five innings.

CofC starter Trey Pooser (2-0) earned the win.

How it happened: UNCW closed to within 5-4 going into the bottom of the sixth when Charleston struck for six runs, five being unearned.

Notes: Kip Brandenburg singled in the first inning and now has a 22-game hitting streak.

Up next: The series concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start.
