UNCW Hits Three Solo Homers In 5-3 Loss

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Despite hitting three home runs, all solo shots, UNCW dropped a 5-3 decision to visiting NC State on Tuesday at Brooks Field.

The Wolfpack improved to 5-9 with the win while the Seahawks dropped to 12-6.

Matt Suggs finished with two hits for UNCW, including his fifth home run of the season. Also homering were Kip Brandenburg and Cole Weiss. The Seahawks were held to seven hits on the night.

Luca Tresh collected two hits for the Wolfpack, who broke a 3-all tie in the seventh and added a fifth run in the eighth inning. Jose Torres and Vojtech Mensik also had two hits apiece.

Cooper King (1-0) earned the win and Chris Villaman notched the save, his first of the season.

Bryce Cota (0-1) took the loss in relief.

How it happened: With the game tied going into the top of the seventh, Devonte Brown, who also hit his second home run of the season earlier in the game, drew a leadoff walk to start the rally. Mensik singled through the right side sending Brown around to third base. One batter later, Noah Soles plated Brown with the go-ahead run on a ground ball to second.

Notes: The Seahawks did not have a hit with a runner on base, finishing 0-for-8 … Brandenburg's home run in the second extended his hitting streak to 20 games … He is the eighth Seahawk to fashion a 20-game hitting streak … Suggs followed Brandenburg's homer with a shot of his own giving UNCW back-to-back homers for the first time this season … The NCSU bullpen combined for four scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits and two base runners to get into scoring position.

Up next: The Seahawks visit the College of Charleston for a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.
