Seahawks Fall in Series Finale

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Junior Emily Bartlett went 3-for-4 and junior Mackense Greico drove in five runs as Furman clinched a non-conference softball series win over UNCW with a 10-0 victory in six innings in the series finale at Boseman Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Paladins upped their record to 6-12 after taking two of three games over the Seahawks, who dropped to 3-13 on the season.

Furman surged to a 3-0 lead in the opening inning. After Greico drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk, freshman Claire Ginder added two more runs with a double to right center field.

The Paladins increased the advantage to 7-0 in the fourth inning by plating four more runs, including a two-run single from Greico and an RBI single by Ginder.

Furman completed the scoring in the sixth inning with three more runs, including a two-run double by Greico.

Freshman Shelby Basso improved to 2-3 in the circle after scattering just five hits in a complete game effort with eight strikeouts.

Five different players authored a hit for the Seahawks. Graduate student Rylee Pate took the loss in the circle after conceding three runs on three hits in the first inning with two strikeouts.

Notes of Interest: UNCW was shut out for just the second time this season … Freshman Tayler Vitola saw her 10-game hitting streak come to an end after going 0-for-2 with a walk, but she has reached base safely in 11 consecutive outings … Junior Gabriella Hessenthaler had her eight-game hitting streak snapped … Furman was 15-for-24 in advancement opportunities and 8-for-22 with runners on base.

Up Next: UNCW opens Colonial Athletic Association play next weekend with a three-game series against the College of Charleston at Boseman Field. The Seahawks and Cougars will play a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 27, at noon before the series finale on Sunday, Mar. 28, at noon.
