Seahawks Reel Off Fifth Straight Win

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's tennis team extended its winning streak to five matches with a 7-0 trouncing of visiting Campbell on Sunday at the UNCW courts.

The Seahawks, who haven't lost in a month, hiked their record to 7-2 on the season, including an unblemished 5-0 mark at home. The Camels stand 0-7.

"Our group was very excited to be back at home and at full strength," said Mait DuBois, UNCW's head men's tennis coach. "We played with great passion and put together a quality match.  Campbell played some excellent doubles and we did a good job of finding a way to win. We raised our level going into singles and did a good job not dropping a set."

Playing the longest series on record, the Seahawks narrowly won the doubles point and then dominated singles play in the 52nd meeting between the two eastern North Carolina schools. UNCW won all five singles matches in straight sets.

Campbell's Matthew Beecher and Benjamin Niv upset No. 28 Bruno Caula and Daniel Groom, 6-3, at No. 1 doubles, but the Seahawks won at No. 2 and No. 3 to capture the doubles point for the seventh time in nine matches. The No. 3 tandem of Dillon Gooch and Bekhzod Rasamatov nailed down the critical point with a 7-6 (6) verdict over CU's Robin Angles and Noe Macquart.

UNCW put the match out of reach early in singles. Rasamatov was the first off the court following a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Angles at No. 5 singles and Michael Copeland's 6-2, 6-2 thumping of CU's Mikael Rodriguez at the No. 6 slot pushed the score to 3-0.

Groom clinched the match for the first time this season by racing past Macquart, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 3 position.

The Seahawks travel to Liberty on Friday, Mar. 26, for a noon match against the Flames in Lynchburg, Va. The Camels next journey to Clinton, S.C., on Tuesday, Mar. 23, for a matchup against the Blue Hose of Presbyterian.
