Seahawks Fall Twice In One-Run Games

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary's clutch hitting and solid pitching led to a sweep of a pair of one-run games, 5-4 and 7-6, of UNCW on Saturday in Colonial Athletic Association baseball action at Plumeri Park.

UNCW fell to 11-5 overall and 0-2 in the CAA. The Tribe, meanwhile, improve to 4-8 and 3-2.

In the opener, the Tribe rallied with three in the bottom of the ninth for the win. With one out, the Tribe drew a pair of walks to ignite the rally. With two outs, a single by Ben Williamson made it a one-run game and the Tribe drew even one batter later on a throwing error. Jack Cone then delivered a single through the leftside to give W&M a 5-4 win.
Game two saw the Seahawks get out to a 3-0 lead in the second on home runs from Matt Suggs and Zachary Bridges.

W&M, however, struck for two in the third and four more, all unearned, in the fourth to take a 6-3 lead.

The Tribe tacked on a run in the seventh.

The Seahawks answered with three in the top of the eighth, to make it a 7-6 deficit, but couldn't push anything across in the ninth.

Adam Smith (2-1) took the loss in the opener and starter Luke Gesell (2-1) was saddled with the loss in the nightcap.

Cole Weiss had three hits in the opener and Brooks Baldwin and Jac Croom had two apiece.

Suggs had three hits in the second game and drove in two runs.

The series concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start at Plumeri Park.
