Diamond Hawks Rough Up #7 ECU, 10-2

The Seahawks finished with a season-high 17 hits

WILMINGTON, N.C.Brooks Baldwin collected four hits and Jacob Shafer tossed five strong innings as UNCW used a season-high 17 hits in a 10-2 win over seventh-ranked East Carolina on Wednesday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks earned their fifth consecutive win to improve to 11-3. ECU, which dipped to 13-3 with the loss, saw its seven-game winning streak halted.

Every Seahawk starter had a hit in the game and Jac Croom, Matt Suggs, Trevor Marsh, Dillon Lifrieri and Taber Mongero all finished with two hits apiece. Kip Brandenburg homered in the fifth inning to extend his hitting streak to 16 games.

Shafer (1-0) allowed a pair of runs and four hits in the first inning but settled down to retire 13 of the next 14 Pirate batters to finish the fifth inning. At one point, Shafer retired 11 consecutive batters.

ECU managed just one hit over the final eight innings. Thomas Francisco had a RBI single for the Pirates.

Starter Nate Nabholz (0-1) took the loss in his first collegiate start. He allowed two runs on two hits and didn't get out of the first inning.

How it happened: After tying the score in the bottom of the first at two-all on Suggs' two-out double, UNCW added two more in the second inning for a 4-2 lead. Mongero singled in the first run to break the deadlock and Croom plate the second run with a ground ball out.

Notes: UNCW relievers Bryce Cota, Hunter Hodges and Adam Smith allowed just three baserunners over the final four innings … ECU was just 1-for-9 with two out … The Seahawks got their leadoff hitter on base five times … UNCW was 7-for-13 with RISP … Baldwin raised hit batting average to .361 on the season.

Up next: The Seahawks open Colonial Athletic Association play this weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
