Diamond Hawks Finish Off Weekend Sweep

Pitching staff allows just three runs over three games

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Brooks Baldwin had three hits and nine pitchers combined to limit Appalachian State to a run on four hits as UNCW finished off a series sweep of the Mountaineers on Sunday with a 7-1 win at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks, who have won their last four outings, improved to 10-3 and have won three of their four weekend series this season. ASU, meanwhile, fell to 6-8 with its sixth consecutive loss.

Baldwin finished with a triple, scored twice and drove three runs as UNCW built a 7-0 lead through seven innings. Kip Brandenburg doubled twice to raise his batting average to .408 and extend his hitting streak to 15 games. Taber Mongero and Noah Bridges both finished with two hits.

Reliever Ethan Chenault (1-0) picked up the win.

Alex Leshock led ASU with a pair of singles.

ASU starter Andrew Terrell (0-1) lasted just five batters, allowing two runs on a pair of hits and three walks.

How it happened: The Seahawks jumped on Terrell in the bottom of the first for two runs. Cole Weiss opened the scoring with a RBI single and Matt Suggs drew a bases loaded walk, ending Terrell's day. UNCW added two in the second and one in the third for a 5-0 lead.

Notes: The three runs allowed by UNCW pitching in the series were the fewest since the Maryland Eastern Shore plated three runs in a series in 2006 … Appalachian State was 2-13 with runners on and 1-6 with runners in scoring position … The Seahawks landed their leadoff hitter on base five times.

Up next: The Seahawks host nationally-ranked East Carolina at 6 p.m. on March 17.
