WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Freshman shortstop
Tayler Vitola banged out five hits and scored three runs as UNCW closed out its weekend series against Ohio with a pair of losses at Boseman Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Seahawks, who dipped to 2-11 on the season, lost by an 8-3 count in the opener before a 5-4 setback in the final game of the weekend. Ohio upped its record to 4-5 after sweeping the four-game set.
Vitola, who has hit safely in eight consecutive games, registered her second three-hit performance of the season in the opener by going 3-for-4 with a run scored before adding a 2-for-2 showing in the nightcap with two runs scored.
Junior catcher
Jada Santiago added three hits for the Seahawks, including a 2-for-3 effort in the second game, while junior
Gabriella Hessenthaler chipped in two hits to extend her hitting streak to six games.
How It Happened – Game 1: Ohio broke a 3-all tie by scoring five runs in its final three at-bats. The Bobcats used a two-run home run in the fifth inning from senior catcher
Brooke Rice before tacking on three more runs in the seventh inning.
How It Happened – Game 2: The Bobcats scored a run in the first and second innings before UNCW trimmed the deficit to 2-1 on an RBI single by Santiago in the bottom of the second inning. However, Ohio plated three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-1 lead the Bobcats did not relinquish. UNCW closed to within 5-4 in the seventh inning with a two-run pinch-hit single from freshman
Charlotte Schultheis and a double steal attempt that brought home junior
Janel Gamache.
Notes of Interest: Vitola has hit safely in 12-of-13 games this season and leads the Seahawks with six multi-hit games … Vitola paced the Seahawks with a .615 batting average in the series while Gamache hit .455 with a home run and three RBI.
