Gesell Pitches UNCW To Series Win

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW received its second straight stellar effort on the mound as Luke Gesell stifled Appalachian State for seven innings in a 4-1 win on Saturday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks won their third straight to improve to 9-3 while the Mountaineers dropped to 6-7.

Gesell (2-0) picked up his second win of the season by allowing one run on six hits over his season-long seven inning outing. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.

Bryce Cota collected his first save for the Seahawks, retiring all four batters he faced.

Brooks Baldwin had two hits including his team-leading fifth home run of the season. It was the third time this season he's homered to leadoff a game for the Seahawks.
Chris Thorburn came off the bench and had two hits and drove in a pair of insurance runs late.

ASU's Luke Drumheller had three hits to lead all players and scored the lone run. Andrew Greckel added two hits for the Mountaineers, who have mustered just two runs this series.

Quinton Martinez (2-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs over 5.2 innings.

How it happened: After seeing the tied in the top of the fourth, UNCW answered with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Jac Croom drove in Ron Evans with a two-out single in the fifth and Thorburn singled through the leftside with two outs to plate Dillon Lifrieri for a 3-1 lead.

Notes: UNCW has now faced six straight lefthanded starters and is 4-2 in those games … Kip Brandenburg doubled in the first inning and now has a 14-game hitting streak … The Seahawks now have an 8-2 lead in the all-time series with Appalachian State … UNCW was 6-14 (.429) with two outs while ASU was 2-11 (.182) … The Seahawks donned yellow jerseys with green trim for the first time since the 1985 season.

Up Next: The series concludes at 1 p.m. on Sunday with Ryan Calvert making the start for UNCW. ASU will start Andrew Terrell in the series finale.
