Seahawks Oust Cougars to Open CAA Tourney

ELON, North Carolina – Freshman guard Taylor Webster and senior forward Carol-Anne Obusek each registered a double-double as UNCW opened the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Basketball Championship presented by Sonabank with a 60-47 victory over the College of Charleston at the Schar Center on Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Seahawks, who won for the fourth time in the last five games, upped their record to 7-13 while Charleston saw its season come to an end at 6-9.
 
Webster matched her season high by scoring 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field and 5-for-8 at the foul line, while grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds to post her second double-double of the season.
 
Obusek, meanwhile, poured in her team-high 12th double-double of the season, including her sixth in a row, after scoring 11 points with 12 rebounds. The Second-Team All-CAA selection converted 5-of-9 shots from the floor in addition to going 1-for-3 from the free throw line.
 
Redshirt junior guard Dazia Powell nearly added a double-double, scoring 14 points with a career-high nine rebounds.
 
Charleston, which was playing its first game since Feb. 28, was paced by freshman Amira Williams' 11 points and six rebounds and four steals.
 
Key Moment: UNCW never trailed in the contest after scoring the game's first five points. The Seahawks led by as many as 19 points in the fourth quarter and limited the Cougars to just 23.9 percent shooting from the field.
 
Game Notes:
  • UNCW and Charleston met for the third time in 12 days with the Seahawks winning all three contests … It is the fifth time the Seahawks have defeated an opponent three times in the same season since they joined the CAA in 1984-85.
  • The Seahawks extended their series win streak against Charleston to five games while upping their advantage over the Cougars to 19-13 … UNCW has won eight of the last nine installments.
  • UNCW improved to 21-35 all-time in the CAA Championship, including an 11-5 record in first round games … The Seahawks have won at least one game in the tournament in 12 of the last 15 years.
  • The Seahawks have reached the CAA quarterfinals in 14 of the last 15 tournaments, including the last five in a row … UNCW is 8-22 all-time in the CAA quarterfinals heading into Thursday's game against Delaware.
  • Charleston and UNCW met in the CAA Tournament for the fourth time in the last six years … The Seahawks have won three of the four pairings.
  • UNCW now stands 4-4 all-time in the CAA Championship as the No. 9 seed.
  • UNCW grabbed 52 rebounds against Charleston on Wednesday, marking the most rebounds in a CAA Tournament game in program history … The 52 rebounds are also the second-highest total by the Seahawks this season.
  • The Seahawks matched a season low by conceding 47 points against Charleston on Wednesday … UNCW opened the season with a 67-47 victory over Norfolk State on Nov. 25, 2020, in Trask Coliseum.
  • The Seahawks set a season low by allowing just 18 points in the first half … UNCW limited Charleston to just 7-of-33 shooting from the field.
  • UNCW has now won 76 consecutive games when holding an opponent to 50 points or less.
  • Obusek and Webster became the first UNCW duo to record a double-double in the same game since Feb. 10, 2019, when GiGi Smith and Chinyere Bell accomplished the feat against William & Mary.
  • The Seahawks attempted a season-low seven three-point field goal attempts.
  • Powell posted her fifth double-digit scoring effort of the season … It was her first double-digit performance since a 13-point showing at Hofstra on Jan. 31, 2021.
