Seahawks' Season Ends in CAA Quarterfinals

ELON, North Carolina – Junior forward Jasmine Dickey and redshirt junior forward Ty Battle each posted a double-double as top-seeded Delaware rallied in the second half to claim a 70-52 victory over UNCW in the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Basketball Championship presented by Sonabank at the Schar Center on Thursday afternoon.
 
The win elevated the Blue Hens' record to 20-3 and moved them into the semifinals against fifth-seeded Hofstra on Friday, Mar. 12, at 2:30 p.m. UNCW's season comes to an end with a 7-14 record, including a 4-2 mark in its final six contests.
 
Dickey, the CAA Player of the Year, scored 12 of her 19 points after the intermission as the Blue Hens outscored UNCW, 40-23, in the final 20 minutes. She finished the game making 6-of-21 shots from the field and 7-of-8 free throws in addition to grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds.
 
Battle, meanwhile, converted 4-of-7 field goal attempts and was 2-for-4 from the free throw line while securing 13 rebounds for her CAA-leading 17th double-double of the season.
 
Senior forward Carol-Anne Obusek was the lone UNCW player to score in double figures after shooting 8-for-11 from the field en route to an 18-point performance. The Cary, N.C., product also grabbed five rebounds and blocked three shots in 35 minutes.
 
Key Moment: Trailing by a 40-34 margin with 5:36 left in the third quarter, Delaware went on a 28-7 run over the next 10 minutes to claim a 62-47 lead the Blue Hens did not relinquish. Junior guard Jewel Smalls scored eight of her 19 points during the outburst as Delaware limited UNCW to just two field goals.
 
Game Notes:
  • Delaware earned its fourth straight win over UNCW in the series, which the Blue Hens lead by a 32-10 margin … Delaware is also 5-1 in neutral site games in the series.
  • Thursday's quarterfinal marked the seventh time Delaware and UNCW have faced each other in the CAA Championship with the Blue Hens holding a 5-2 advantage in those contests.
  • Delaware outrebounded the Seahawks by a 48-29 margin, including a 24-6 advantage in offensive rebounds.
  • The Seahawks held a 34-18 edge in points in the paint … In its final six games, UNCW averaged 33.0 points per game in the paint.
  • Obusek closes out her senior season with 13 consecutive double-digit scoring performances … In two games at the CAA Championship, she was 13-for-20 from the field and averaged 8.5 rebounds per outing.
  • With three blocked shots against Delaware, Obusek finishes her career with 68 rejections, which is good for ninth on the Seahawks' all-time list.
