Baldwin Homers In Seahawk Win Over WCU

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh on its way to an 8-6 series tying win over Western Carolina in college baseball action Saturday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks, who suffered their first loss of the season in the series opener on Friday, upped their record to 4-1 while the Catamounts slid to 5-2.

Reliever Adam Smith (1-0) picked up the win with three innings of relief while WCU's Zach Franklin (1-1) took the hard-luck loss.

Cole Weiss had three hits and knocked in a run while Kip Brandenburg collected two hits to extend his hitting streak to seven games, dating back to last season. Also extending a hitting streak was Brooks Baldwin, who with two hits, including a home run, now has hit in six straight.

How it happened: With two outs and runners on first and second, Chris Thorburn lined a 1-1 pitch to center field where it was misplayed, allowing Noah Bridges to score and send Matt Suggs to third. One batter later, Suggs would score the second and final run of the inning on a passed ball for an 8-6 lead.

Notes: Baldwin homered in a three-run sixth that gave UNCW a 6-4 lead … It was his second home run of the season … Noah Liles collected two hits in his first start of the season in the outfield … Neither starting pitcher made it past the fifth inning.

Up next: The series concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start.
