Diamond Hawks Take Weekend Series From Catamounts

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Matt Suggs had three hits and drove in four runs while reliever Hunter Hodges tossed 3.2 hitless innings as UNCW earned a series win over Western Carolina on Sunday at Brooks Field with a 10-6 win.

The Seahawks won their second series to open the season and moved to 5-1. The Catamounts saw their record drop to 5-3 and have lost three of their last four outings.

Suggs keyed the Seahawk lineup with two doubles and a home run. His two-run homer off the flagpole in left center field gave the Seahawks a 6-1 lead in the third inning. Four other Seahawks finished with multiple-hit games, including Brooks Baldwin and Taber Mongero, who had two hits apiece and scored twice.

Hodges (1-0) closed out the game for his first collegiate win. He walked two and struck out three in his career-long outing.

Daniel Walsh led the Catamounts with three hits, including a grand slam in the fifth that brought WCU to within 7-5. Zach Ketterman added two hits and Luke Robinson had two.

Starter Ryan Mitschele (0-1) took the loss for the Catamounts, surrendering seven runs, four earned, over four innings of work.

How it happened: The Seahawks jumped on Mitschele for three in the first inning, taking advantage of a error before Suggs doubled into the leftfield corner to plate two for a 3-0 lead. UNCW added a run in the second and two more in the third for a 6-1 lead.

Notes: Kip Brandenburg had two hits and has now hit safely in his eight games, dating back to last season … Hodges 3+ inning relief stint was the second for the Seahawks this weekend, joining Adam Smith on Saturday … UNCW starter Ryan Calvert struck out six in 4.2 innings in his collegiate debut … UNCW's all-time series with WCU is now tied at 13-13.

Up next: The Seahawks open a four-game series with visiting Cincinnati on Mar. 4 with a 4 p.m. start.
