UNCW Volleyball Edged By Dukes In Five


WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW fell in five sets to visiting James Madison in the Colonial Athletic Association season opener for both programs on Friday at Hanover Hall.
The Dukes ran their record to 2-1 while the Seahawks dropped to 0-3.

Kirsten Badowski led three Seahawks in double-figure kills with 17 while Kyla Augustine and Katie Lanz chipped in 13 and 11, respectively. Badowski fashioned a double-double with 10 digs.

Also posting a double-double for UNCW was Brynn Montgomery, who doled out 29 assists and collected a team-high 16 digs.

Miette Veldman held match-high honors with 25 kills for the Dukes, who finished with a .249 hitting average. Chloe Wilmoth had 12 and Sophia Davis added 10 kills of her own.

Joining Veldman (10 digs) with a double-double was Caroline Dozier with 42 assists and 10 digs.

Davis notched seven total blocks, include two solo, and Savannah Marshall held match-high honors with 23 digs.

UNCW built a 2-1 lead through three sets with a 25-21 win in the third set, but JMU rallied with a 25-23 win in the fourth and 19-17 in the fifth to clinch the win.

Up next: The Seahawks and Dukes play again Saturday at 1 p.m.
