Seahawks Edge Charleston for First CAA Win

CHARLESTON, South Carolina – Junior guard Za'Nautica Downs scored all 17 of her points in the second half to lead UNCW to its first Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball win of the season, a 68-66 victory over the College of Charleston at TD Arena on Friday evening.
 
The Seahawks, who ended an 11-game losing streak, ran their record to 4-12 overall and 1-9 in the CAA. Charleston dropped to 6-7 overall and 2-5 in the circuit after playing for the first time in three weeks.
 
Downs led three Seahawks in double figures with her 17-point effort, knocking down 4-of-7 three-pointers along with a 5-for-6 showing at the free throw line. She also added three assists, two steals and two rebounds in 27 minutes off the bench.
 
Senior forward Carol-Anne Obusek authored her eighth double-double of the season after netting 11 points and matching her career high with 13 rebounds while junior guard Camille Downs chipped in 10 points to go with seven rebounds.
 
Charleston was led by junior guard Tyler Collins, who scored a game-high 18 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 effort at the foul line. She also dished out eight assists and grabbed three rebounds.
 
Freshman guard Chelsea Wooten added 14 points and four rebounds while junior guard Madison Taylor came off the bench to contribute 10 points for the Cougars in a losing effort.
 
Key Moment: Trailing by a 44-37 margin with 8:21 remaining in the third quarter, the Seahawks closed out the frame with a 20-9 run. Za'Nautica Downs scored 11 of her 17 points during the outburst as UNCW did not concede the lead from that point.    
 
Game Notes:
  • UNCW has won three straight meetings against Charleston, upping the Seahawks' lead in the series to 17-13 … The Seahawks are also 8-2 in their last 10 encounters with the Cougars.
  • The Seahawks earned their first win since defeating UNCG by a 60-55 count on Dec. 11, 2020 … UNCW also secured its second road victory in eight tries this season.
  • The Seahawks employed their ninth different starting lineup of the season as junior guard Rinnah Green started for the first time in her college career … Freshman Taylor Webster is the only UNCW player to start all 16 games.
  • UNCW outrebounded Charleston by a 49-33 margin, marking the Seahawks' most rebounds since opening the season with 55 caroms against Norfolk State on Nov. 25, 2020.
  • Charleston attempted 32 three-point field goal attempts in Friday's contest … The 32 attempts are the most by a UNCW opponent since Dec. 29, 2013, when Florida Atlantic hit 12-of-32 triples in an 81-64 victory over the Seahawks at Trask Coliseum.
  • UNCW grabbed a season-high 21 offensive rebounds, which the Seahawks turned into 21 second-chance points.
  • Obusek registered her sixth double-double in the last seven games with her 11 points and 13 rebounds … The Cary, N.C., product also scored in double figures for the eighth consecutive game.
  • Camille Downs posted her first double-digit scoring effort since netting 12 points against Drexel on Jan. 2, 2021 … She has reached double figures five times in 13 games this season.
  • Camille Downs also matched her season high with seven rebounds … It is the third time this season she has grabbed seven rebounds (vs. UNCG, vs. Drexel).
  • Za'Nautica Downs has scored in double figures in 10 consecutive games following her 17-point performance on Friday night.
Up Next: UNCW and Charleston complete the weekend series on Sunday, Feb. 28, with a 1 p.m. contest at Trask Coliseum. Sunday's game will serve as the Seahawks' annual "Pink Game."
