Seahawks Complete Weekend Sweep of Cougars

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Senior forward Carol-Anne Obusek scored a game-high 20 points with 11 rebounds and junior guard Za'Nautica Downs added 17 points off the bench as UNCW completed a sweep of its Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball series against Charleston with a 61-54 victory at Trask Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Seahawks improved to 5-12 overall and 2-9 in the CAA after winning their second straight game. Charleston, meanwhile, dipped to 6-8 overall and 2-6 in the circuit with its fourth loss in a row.
 
Obusek, who recorded her seventh double-double in the last eight games, made 9-of-13 shots from the floor and was 2-for-3 from the foul line. Za'Nautica Downs, meanwhile, was 3-for-9 from the field and hit 9-of-12 free throws to go along with five rebounds.
 
Junior guard Camille Downs chipped in nine points, nine rebounds and six assists in the victory for the Seahawks.
 
Junior guard Madison Taylor led four Charleston players in double figures with 18 points, knocking down 6-of-15 field goal attempts, including a 4-for-11 effort from three-point range. Freshman guard Chelsea Wooten added 11 points while junior forward Arynn Eady and freshman forward Amira Williams each contributed 10 points.
 
Key Moment: UNCW trailed by a 47-45 margin with 5:52 remaining in regulation before putting together a 16-7 spurt to claim the victory. Camille Downs scored seven of her nine points to lead the charge while Za'Nautica Downs added five points.     
 
Game Notes:
  • UNCW has won four straight meetings against Charleston, upping the Seahawks' lead in the series to 18-13 … The Seahawks are also 9-2 in the last 11 installments against the Cougars.
  • The Seahawks won their first home game since Dec. 11, 2020, when they defeated UNCG by a 60-55 margin.
  • UNCW outrebounded Charleston by a 49-30 margin, including a 12-11 edge in offensive rebounds … It is the seventh time this season the Seahawks have held the advantage on the glass.
  • Led by Za'Nautica Downs, the Seahawks were 26-for-33 at the free throw line in Sunday's win over Charleston … The 26 made free throws are a season high for the Seahawks.
  • The Seahawks also set a season high with seven blocked shots, including two rejections from Obusek and junior guard Rinnah Green.
  • Obusek has led the Seahawks in rebounding in 11 consecutive games after her 11-rebound effort on Sunday … She has also reached double figures in rebounding 10 times this season.
  • Obusek recorded the second 20-point game of her college career and finished just one point shy of matching her career high, which was set in the Dec. 11 victory against UNCG.
  • Za'Nautica Downs extended her streak of consecutive double-digit scoring games to 11 games in a row.
  • Charleston finished the two-game series shooting just 14-of-61 (.230) from three-point range after a 5-for-29 effort on Sunday afternoon.
