Seahawks Sweep Series From VCU


WILMINGTON, N.C. – Jac Croom collected three hits and scored three runs while Adam Smith tossed 3.1 hitless relief as UNCW finished off a doubleheader sweep of VCU with a 9-5 win in the nightcap on Sunday at Brooks Field. The Seahawks won game one, 4-1.

The Seahawks (3-0) also completed a season-opening three-game sweep of the series Rams (0-3).

Croom, Brooks Baldwin and Cole Weiss combined for seven hits and six runs in the second game at the top of the order while Trevor Marsh also added two hits.

Jason Hudak (1-0) picked up the win in relief before Smith nailed down the save by walking two and striking out three.

Taylor Davis (0-1) was tagged with the loss for VCU.

Devan Barnett came into the game as a pinch hitter and delivered a two-run homer to right in the fourth inning. He later doubled in a run in his collegiate debut.

In the opening game, UNCW's Luke Gesell earned the win, allowing one run on three hits over five innings of work.

Cody Benton earned the save in his collegiate debut. Benton struck out three in two innings of work.

Baldwin had two hits, including a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first against losing pitcher Justin Sorokowski (0-1). Weiss added two hits.

Hogan Brown was the lone Ram with two hits.

The Seahawks continue their season-opening homestand on Feb. 2 when they host Western Carolina for three games.
