Match Recap: Men's Tennis | | Joe Browning

Seahawks Win Second Straight Match

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW notched the early doubles point and then rode strong performances in singles to barrel past Kennesaw State, 7-0, in men's tennis on Saturday at the UNCW courts.

The Seahawks won their second in a row to improve to 2-1 on the season. The Owls of the ASUN Conference fell to 1-3 and dropped the first leg of a two-game trip to UNCW and Coastal Carolina on the weekend.

Playing under sunny skies and temperatures in the low 40s, the Seahawks wasted no time in taking control, posting a pair of 6-3 decisions in doubles. The No. 27-ranked tandem of Bruno Caula and Daniel Groom knocked off KSU's Sebastian Osorio and Sergio Ingles at No. 1 doubles before Michael Copeland and Gabriel Hurtado downed Gaston Muhammad and Raul Garcia by the same score at the No. 2 slot to lock down the point.

The Seahawks then took the first three matches off the court in singles to enjoy a successful home debut. Copeland recorded the clincher with a 6-4, 6-2, verdict over KSU's Kevin Patel at No. 4 singles.

Junior Davide Innocenti and freshman Bekhzod Rasamatov prevailed in extended matches. Innocenti outlasted Ingles at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (8-6), and Rasamatov grinded out a 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (12-10) victory over Muhammad in a marathon match at the No. 6 position.

"Our intensity was good from start to finish today," said UNCW Head Coach Mait DuBois. "We had some adversity because we didn't get to practice the last couple days due to rain, but I was pleased with how our guys handled it. Anytime you can sweep a good team like Kennesaw it gives you a lot of confidence."

The Seahawks are back in action tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 21) when they travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., to battle No. 13 Wake Forest in a 5 p.m. match. The Owls shoot down to Conway, S.C., to face Coastal Carolina in a noon contest.
