CHARLOTTE, North Carolina – UNCW surged to a 3-0 lead and held off a late rally by Charlotte to earn its second win in a row, a 3-2 victory over the 49ers at Transamerica Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Seahawks, who played their first game in two weeks, moved their record to 2-0-0 while Charlotte saw its record run to 0-1-1.
Junior midfielder
Athit Berg gave the Seahawks an early 1-0 lead when he converted a penalty kick past redshirt junior goalkeeper Daniel Kuzemka.
With less than four minutes left in the first half, UNCW doubled its advantage when senior midfielder
Tsubasa Takada registered his first goal with the Seahawks on an unassisted marker.
Sophomore
Jalen Anderson extended the advantage to 3-0 in the 59th minute when he converted a pass from senior defender
Alejandro Saez for his first goal of the season.
But, Charlotte answered with two goals in a 56-second span to narrow the gap to 3-2. Junior forward Alex Willis netted an unassisted goal past sophomore goalkeeper
Gabriel Perrotta at 60:19 before junior forward Preston Popp scored off a feed from redshirt junior midfielder Chance Pellerin in the 62nd minute to make it a one-goal game.
Perrotta made two saves in the victory for the Seahawks, who were outshot by a 16-9 margin. Kuzemka registered three saves in the loss for Charlotte, which made its home debut.
Game Notes:
- UNCW and Charlotte met for the first time since the 2016 season … The Seahawks have now won back-to-back meetings in the series.
- UNCW Coach Aidan Heaney, who faced his alma mater on Saturday, earned the 199th victory of his head coaching career, including his 178th as the Seahawks' bench boss.
- The Seahawks scored multiple goals in a game for the 12th time since the start of the 2019 season and improved to 11-1-0 in those games … In addition, UNCW has now won 27 consecutive games when scoring three or more goals.
- Five different players have scored the Seahawks' five goals this season.
- Berg became the first UNCW player to record a penalty kick goal since Danny Reynolds against William & Mary on Nov. 10, 2019, in the Colonial Athletic Association quarterfinals.
