Diamond Hawks Take Opener With Rally

Seahawks score three in the ninth to clip VCU, 5-4

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Chris Thorburn's bases-loaded walk in the ninth inning capped a three-run come-from-behind win 5-4 over visiting VCU on Saturday in the season opener for both programs at Brooks Field.

Jac Croom finished with two hits for the Seahawks, including a game-tying single in the ninth inning.

Cole Benton (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Seahawks while Danny Watson (0-1) took the loss for the Rams, who led 4-2 entering the ninth.

Michael Haydak had two hits for the Rams, who outhit the Seahawks, 8-7. Tyler Locklear belted a solo home run in the top of the fourth to give VCU a 1-0 lead.

How it happened: Taber Mongero led off the ninth for the Seahawks with a walk and came around to score on Brooks Baldwin's triple to leftfield two batters later. Croom followed with a clean single through the middle to tie the game. After Croom moved into scoring position, Cole Weiss was hit with a pitch and pinch hitter Jack Howell followed with another base on balls to load up the bases for Thorburn who worked the count full before seeing ball four.

Notes: It was the second straight season the Seahawks earned a win in the season opener in the bottom of the ninth, trimming Dayton last season, 10-9 … Landen Roupp allowed one earned run over 5.2 innings for the Seahawks … VCU's Michael Dailey struck out 10 batters and allowed four hits and two runs in a no-decision.

Up Next: The two will continue their series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
