Men's Basketball Joe Browning

Bounce Back On Minds Of Seahawks

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The sting of last Saturday's 77-48 loss at Jacksonville lingers for the UNCW men's basketball team, but a busy week ahead won't allow the Seahawks to dwell on the lopsided defeat for long.

UNCW, 3-5, plays host to NCAA Division II opponent Mount Olive on Wednesday (Dec. 15) in a 7 p.m. tipoff at Trask Coliseum. It marks the fourth home game of the year for the Seahawks, who dropped a 74-69 count to Norfolk State in their last home appearance.

The Seahawks are undertaking a rugged stretch of three games in eight days. Following Wednesday's contest, the Seahawks head back on the road to take on High Point on Saturday at 2 p.m. It will be UNCW's first look at HPU's sparkling new Qubein Center.

Wednesday's matchup with the Trojans will be carried locally on The Breeze 95.9 FM and aired on the Colonial Athletic Association's streaming partner, FloHoops.com. Play-by-play voice Mike Vaccaro and color analyst Marty Feurer will be on the call.

"We're just working right now to get ready for our next opponent in Mount Olive," said second-year head coach Takayo Siddle. "Mount Olive is a very good basketball team. They will be a tough matchup for us. They're smaller in size, but scrappy, fast and tough. All of those present a challenge for us, so we're going to have to play a complete basketball game in order to get the job done."

The Seahawks struggled offensively again last weekend in North Florida. UNCW made just 32.7 percent of its shots for the sixth consecutive game under 40 percent this season.

Senior guard Jaylen Sims continues to pace the team in scoring (11.6 ppg) and rebounding (6.4 rpg). He led the team in scoring for the third time in Saturday's game at JU. The Charlotte product appears in his 84th game for the Seahawks on Wednesday.

Mount Olive is the second non-Division I foe of the year for the Seahawks, who outlasted Guilford, 77-68, in the home opener back on Nov. 12. The Quakers hung tough until the Seahawks held the visitors without a field goal over a four-minute stretch late in the game to nail down the nine-point victory.

Wednesday's contest is an exhibition game for the Trojans. Mount Olive carries a 4-4 record into a Tuesday (Dec. 14) game vs. Lees-McRae in Banner Elk.

The Seahawks have battled the Trojans six times through the years, but only two have been regular season contests. UNCW is 2-0 against Mount Olive in regular season matchups and 4-0 in exhibition contests. All six meetings have been played at Trask Coliseum.

UNCW's last four games against Mount Olive have been exhibition tilts. The Seahawks last played the Trojans in a regular season game on Feb. 11, 1993, when Kevin Eastman piloted the club.

UNCW-Mount Olive Net Notes
  • The Seahawks are playing their fourth home game. UNCW brings a 2-1 home record into the contest after defeating Guilford and Coastal Carolina and losing to Norfolk State. Head Coach Takayo Siddle stands 5-5 at home in two seasons, including 3-4 one year ago and 2-1 this year.
  • UNCW owns a 48-7 all-time record against non-DI foes, including 40-3 at Trask Coliseum, after besting Guilford by a 77-68 count on Nov. 12.
  • The Seahawks stand 3-5 in non-conference games, but have lost three in a row to out of league foes.
  • The Seahawks are playing the second of six contests against state opponents in 2021-22. UNCW is 1-0 vs. state teams after trimming Guilford.
