Dolphins Down Seahawks In North Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Florida – Jacksonville used a monster 19-0 run midway through the first half and shot 55.1 percent en route to a 77-48 men's basketball victory over visiting UNCW early Saturday at Swisher Gymnasium.

The Dolphins won for the third time in four outings to hike their record to 5-3 on the season. The Seahawks dropped their third straight and fell to 3-5.

Redshirt junior guard Kevion Nolan paced four Dolphins in double figures with 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Graduate guard Jordan Davis added 12 points, redshirt sophomore forward Mike Marsh scored 11 and redshirt sophomore guard Tommy Bruner had 10.

Senior guard Jaylen Sims was the lone Seahawk in double figures with 12 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Four other Seahawks – Jamahri Harvey, Alec Oglesby, Mike Okauru and Trazarien White - had contributed points apiece.

In the first meeting between the two teams since 2003, the Dolphins jumped out front, 14-10, with just over nine minutes left in the opening period before reeling off 19 unanswered points to break the game open.

The crafty Nolan scratched for seven points in the spurt, including a three-pointer with 2:58 left in the first half as the lead ballooned to 33-10. Nolan scored 12 points and the Dolphins forced 13 turnovers by UNCW for a 35-14 bulge at the break, the largest halftime deficit of the season for the Seahawks.

Things didn't get much better for the Seahawks after intermission. The Dolphins dialed long distance, draining 8-of-11 three-pointers in the final 20 minutes, to remain unbeaten at home after four outings.

JU's largest lead of the contest came with 7:01 left when Nolan got loose on the right wing for his fourth triple of the day to extend the Dolphin lead to 66-31.

The Seahawks continued to struggle offensively on Saturday, making 32.7 percent of their field goal attempts while committing 17 turnovers. UNCW did battle JU to a draw on the boards, with each team collecting 26 rebounds. UNCW finished just 4-for-21 behind the arc. JU went 11-for-17 overall.
