Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Joe Browning

White Helps Seahawks Dominate Trojans

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Freshman guard Trazarien White made 9-of-13 shots en route to a career-high 21 points and added a game-high seven rebounds to fuel UNCW past Mount Olive, 85-55, in men's basketball action Wednesday night at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 4-5 on the season. The Trojans had a four-game winning streak snapped and stand 5-4 overall.

White, an electric newcomer from Mansfield, Texas, made his sixth consecutive start and sizzled from the floor, missing just four field goal attempts overall and draining all three of his three-point field goal tries. He also dished out three assists in 27 minutes of action.

Graduate guard James Baker, Jr., added 16 points and graduate guard Mike Okauru chipped in 10 points and five boards for the Seahawks, who shot a season-best 50.7 percent from the floor.

Junior guard Michael Brown was the lone Mount Olive player in double figures with 10 points.

"I thought Mount Olive played very hard…we have a lot of respect for their program," said Takayo Siddle, UNCW's second-year head coach. "We were trying to find our confidence. We did a good job coming out and imposing our will, getting to the paint and making the right play.

"I'm very proud of our guys. I don't think there was a point in the game that we didn't have the energy we needed to get better. I'm proud of the way they responded.

"Trazarien is an energy guy and a lot of his offense comes off that energy. His energy is something we always need. He's getting better every day. His practice habits are growing and that's why he's playing well."

The undermanned Trojans took an early seven-point lead before the Seahawks caught up and overwhelmed the NCAA Division II visitors.

MOU pieced together three straight buckets midway through the first half and Trayvon Ferrell's basket in the paint with 9:53 left in the first half gave the Trojans their largest lead of the game, 26-19.

But the Seahawks answered with a 12-0 spurt to take control and increased the margin to 45-32 at halftime behind White's 12 points at the break.

UNCW poured it on in the second period and led by as many 35 points in the contest. The Seahawks were on top, 53-38, with just over 17 minutes left when a 15-2 run over a five-minute stretch iced the game.

The Seahawks limited the Trojans to 29.2 percent shooting and just 5-of-23 behind the arc, one night after sinking 18-of-34 three-pointers in a victory at Lees-McRae. UNCW also recorded a season-high 10 blocked shots, anchored by four from junior forward Amari Kelly.

UNCW plays its final non-conference road game early Saturday with a 2 p.m. tip at High Point. It will be the team's first appearance in HPU's new Qubein Center.
