Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Joe Browning

Spartans Hang On Against Seahawks, 74-69

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Reserve junior forward Dana Tate, Jr., scored 12 of his team-high 17 points in the second half to lift Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference favorite Norfolk State past UNCW, 74-69, in a non-conference men's basketball game on Wednesday night at Trask Coliseum.

The Spartans won their fourth straight game and hiked their record to 9-1 on the season. The Seahawks, returning to action after having two games cancelled last week in Montana due to a flu outbreak, stand 3-4.

Tate, who entered the game averaging 8.7 points per game, made 5-of-8 field goals and added a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line to give the Spartans a lift off the bench. Another reserve, redshirt senior guard Jalen Hawkins, contributed 16 points. Junior point guard Christian Ings was the only other NSU player in double figures with 14 points.

Four of UNCW's five starters reached double digits. Graduate senior Mike Okauru led the way with 18 points, followed by sophomore guard Jamahri Harvey with 13 and graduate guard James Baker, Jr., and senior guard Jaylen Sims with 12 apiece.

"We had a chance to win the game and we didn't make the plays to win it. They did and that's the bottom line," said Takayo Siddle, UNCW's second-year head coach. "Give Norfolk State credit. They have a very good basketball team that's probably going to win their conference. It was a one-possession game with 35 seconds left. We had our chance. We're getting better. We're growing. We're going to be fine."

In only the second meeting between the two teams, the Seahawks went toe-to-toe with the once-beaten Spartans in a game that featured nine ties and 10 lead changes.

UNCW led, 67-66, after Okauru's driving layup with 1:34 remaining, but the Spartans scored eight of the final 12 points to post their fifth victory away from home this year.

With the Seahawks clinging to a one-point advantage in crunch time, the Spartans scored a string of six consecutive points in the final minute and forged ahead, 72-67, on a pair of free throws by Joe Bryant, Jr. After Sims made a layup with three ticks left, Tate closed out the scoring with two free throws to avenge a loss last year in Norfolk.

NSU picked up 40 points off the bench en route to the win and canned 22-of-26 free throws to offset 41.1 percent shooting. The Seahawks shot 39.3 percent overall, but made just 14-of-22 at the charity stripe in the loss.

In the first half, the two teams fought to a 34-all draw. Both clubs went 11-for-30 from the field as defense dominated the game early. Ings pocketed 12 of his 14 points in the opening period as the Spartans survived a 14-0 run by the Seahawks midway through the period.

UNCW trailed by 10 points after just five minutes, 15-5, but rallied with the 14-point spurt and bolted ahead by eight points, 29-21, when Harvey drained the first of three treys at the 3:04 mark of the first half.

The Seahawks break for final exams before returning to the floor on Saturday, Dec. 11, at Jacksonville. It will be a 3 p.n. tip from Swisher Gymnasium in Florida.
