Coastal Carolina Sprints Past Seahawks, 73-62

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Sophomore forward Aja Blount and senior guard Tyra Brown combined to score 43 points as Coastal Carolina sprinted past UNCW to earn a 73-62 victory in non-conference women's basketball action at Trask Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.
 
The win allowed the Chanticleers to remain unbeaten at 4-0, while UNCW dipped to 1-3 after its third consecutive loss.
 
Blount authored her first double-double of the season after scoring a game-high 23 points, including the 1,000th of her college career, with a season-high 14 rebounds. Brown, meanwhile, knocked down 6-of-14 field goal attempts along with a perfect 6-for-6 effort at the free throw line en route to a season-high 20 points.
 
Sophomore center Janeen Camp added nine points off the bench for Coastal Carolina, which shot 49.1 percent from the field.
 
Redshirt senior forward Micah Hoggatt paced the Seahawks with a career-high 14 points in addition to grabbing a team-high five rebounds. Senior guard Carrie Gross added 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field, including a 2-for-2 effort from three-point range.
 
Graduate student guard Allie Best dished out a season-high eight assists for the Seahawks, who registered a season-high 19 assists on 22 made field goals.
 
Key Moment: Led by nine points from Blount, Coastal Carolina used an 18-8 run over a six-minute span to turn a five-point deficit into a 20-15 lead the Chanticleers never relinquished. The Seahawks closed to within 36-32 late in the second quarter, but were unable to get any closer.
 
Game Notes:
  • Coastal Carolina has won the last three meetings over the Seahawks … UNCW still holds a 23-8 advantage in the series between the regional rivals.
  • Best's eight assists are the most by a UNCW player since Jan. 27, 2019, when Shrita Parker had eight assists at Drexel.
  • UNCW has registered 33 assists in its last two games after beginning the season with just 17 assists in its opening two games … The Seahawks' 19 assists against Coastal Carolina are the most in a game since Nov. 16, 2019, when they had 20 assists against South Carolina State.
  • Coastal Carolina went a perfect 15-for-15 at the free throw line, becoming the first UNCW opponent to make all of its foul shots since James Madison went 7-for-7 on Feb. 18, 2018.
  • Hoggatt had her streak of nine straight free throws made snapped when she missed the first of two tries with 6:36 remaining in the first half.
  • Graduate student center Dejah Carter dished out a career-high five assists.
  • Coastal Carolina outrebounded UNCW, 39-30, but the Seahawks held a 17-15 edge in offensive rebounds … UNCW has been outrebounded in all three of its losses this season.
  • The Seahawks committed a season-low 16 turnovers and had more assists than turnovers for the first time this season.
