Seahawks Cruise Past Chants At Trask

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW reeled off 18 unanswered points to erase an early deficit and never trailed the rest of the way in a 65-53 victory over visiting Coastal Carolina in the renewal of the regional men's basketball series on Thursday night at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks moved to 2-0 at home with the win and evened their record at 2-2 on the young season. The Chanticleers now stand 1-1.

Senior guard Jaylen Sims led three Seahawks in double figures with 13 points and collected a team-high eight rebounds. Junior point guard Shykeim Phillips scored 11 and freshman guard Trazarien White wound up with 10 points.

Senior guard Vince Cole paced the Chanticleers with 12 points, while sophomore center Essam Mostafa registered a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds and senior guard Rudi Williams finished with 10 points.

"That was a total team effort," said a drenched UNCW head coach Takayo Siddle following a locker room celebration. "I thought everyone on our roster contributed. Guys that didn't play were up cheering.

"Coastal Carolina fought and kept coming at us and we kept hitting them with haymakers. I'm so proud of our guys."

In the first matchup between the two clubs since December of 2007, Coastal jumped out to a quick 9-2 advantage, but the Seahawks scored the next 18 points to take control. The lead ballooned to as many as 14 points with five minutes remaining in the game before the final outcome.

UNCW took a 33-23 lead into intermission, but Coastal closed the gap to six points, 41-35, at the 15-minute mark on a three-pointer on the right wing by Garrick Green. The Seahawks responded with a jumper by Phillips and a free throw from Sims to get the margin back to 44-35 with 11:28 on the clock.

Still on top, 51-44, UNCW strung together seven straight points and recorded its largest lead of the game when James Baker, Jr., connected on a hook shot in the paint at 5:28 for a 58-44 advantage.

Coastal refused to go away quietly and closed the gap to six points again with an 8-0 spurt. A free throw by Kevin Williamson pulled the Chants to within 58-52 with 2:36 left. UNCW then sealed the game with five free throws and a monster dunk by White to notch their second home win in as many tries.

In the first half, a layup by Mostafa staked the Chants to an early 9-2 margin at 16:31, but the Seahawks roared back with their 18-point rally, including three triples by Sims and another three-ball from Jaylen Fornes to crank out an 11-point margin.

UNCW heads back on the road for its next four games, beginning with a 4 pm. Saturday test at Delaware State. The Seahawks then fly out to Montana for three contests in the University of Montana's Zootown Classic in Missoula, Mont.
