Seahawks Win Second Straight Game

DOVER, Del. – UNCW kicked off its extended holiday road trip to Delaware and Montana by slipping past Delaware State, 67-63, in a wild afternoon matinee early Saturday at Memorial Hall.

The Seahawks, completing a rigorous stretch of three games in five days, picked up their first road victory and won their second in a row to improve to 3-2 on the season. The Hornets dropped to 2-3.

Senior guard Mike Okauru made 9-of-15 shots for a season-high 22 points to anchor the Seahawks, who shot 38 percent and attempted 38 three-pointers on the day. Senior guard Jaylen Sims added 17 points and graduate guard Jaylen Fornes had 11 to give the Seahawks three in double figures.

Graduate guard Myles Carter paced the Hornets with a game-high 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double. Junior guard Dominik Fragala collected 13 and first-year guard Corey Perkins had 12 for DSU, which shot 48.1 percent on the day

"I told the guys that I'm happy right now," said Takayo Siddle, UNCW's second-year coach. "When you think about what we've been going through…we've been traveling like crazy and playing every other day.

"Our best shooters were getting clean looks and they weren't dropping. We just got tired. We stayed the course and figured out a way to win."

The Seahawks trailed by five points at halftime, 36-31, but started the second half with a three-point barrage – keyed by Sims and Fornes - that carried the team past the stubborn Hornets.

A layup by DSU's D'Marco Baucom gave the Hornets a 49-46 advantage at the 14-minute mark before Sims and Fornes drained back-to-back treys to give the Seahawks the lead for good.

The margin stretched to seven points, 66-59, on a triple in the left corner by Okauru with 4:15 on the clock before DSU rallied to close within 66-63 on Fragala's jumper along the right elbow with one minute remaining.

Freshman guard Trazarien White made the front end of a bonus situation with 21 ticks on the clock and the Seahawks closed out Siddle's fourth road victory in his two seasons.

UNCW pulled down 21 offensive rebounds and wound up beating the Hornets on the glass, 40-34. It marked the first time this season that the Seahawks have outrebounded their opponent.

DSU jumped ahead by 12 points in the first half before the Seahawks reeled off 11 straight points to cut into the early deficit. The Hornets scored the final eight points of the opening period, however, to take a 36-31 lead into intermission.

Okauru, who scored nine points in the 11-0 spurt, paced the Seahawks with 17 points in the first half on 7-for-9 shooting. The rest of the team went 6-for-24 in the first 20 minutes.

The Seahawks leave the area early Sunday for a trip to the Pacific Northwest and an appearance in the 2021 Zootown Classic at Montana's Dahlberg Arena. The team's first game is Wednesday, Nov. 24, against Southern Miss at 7 pm. ET.
