Panthers Hold Off Seahawks In Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania – Pitt offset late shooting issues by cashing in at the free throw line to hold off feisty UNCW, 59-51, in a men's basketball non-conference game on Tuesday night at the Petersen Events Center.

The Seahawks fell to 1-2 and have alternated wins and losses in the first three outings of the new season. Coach Takayo Siddle's club is navigating a stretch of three games in five days during a busy week.

Pitt, 1-2, won for the first time in 2021-22 following season-opening losses to The Citadel and West Virginia.

Sophomore guard Femi Odukale paced the Panthers with 15 points and added seven rebounds. Sophomore forward John Hugley notched a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds – his second double-double of the year.

Freshman guard Trazarien White led the Seahawks for the first time this year with a career-high 14 points and added seven rebounds and three steals. Graduate guard Mike Okauru chipped in 12 points, five rebounds and three dimes.

"We won the second half and I told the guys not to let this loss define us," said Siddle, UNCW's second-year head coach. "There were a lot of positives to build on, especially in the last half. We fought, competed and scrapped. The ball just didn't go our way at the end.

"We able to get some stops in the second half and our press was really good in the second half. Trazarien White brought some life to the team."

The Panthers came out firing from the start and sprinted ahead by 13 points at halftime, 34-21. Jeff Capel's club then pushed the margin to 17 points in the first two minutes of the second half before the Seahawks got untracked.

Pitt scored the first two buckets of the final period and when senior forward Dan Oladapo converted a layup with 18:51 remaining, the Panthers enjoyed their largest lead of the contest, 38-21.

The Panthers were still on top, 47-34, when the Seahawks reeled off 10 unanswered points to pull within, 47-44, with 10:23 on the clock. A bank shot on the right side by White closed the gap to three points and a three-pointer by graduate transfer Jaylen Fornes chopped the lead to 49-47 at the 9:14 mark.

Pitt responded with five points in a row, however, to get the margin back to seven points and closed out the game by draining 9-of-12 free throws over the final seven minutes. The effort at the foul line provided much-needed scoring for the Panthers, who went 6:47 without a field goal during the pivotal stretch.

The Seahawks struggled from the field on the night, shooting 28.8 percent from the field on 17-of-59 field goals. The Panthers finished at 42.9 percent behind 21-of-49 field goals.

In the first meeting between the two schools, the Panthers had the hot hand early, hitting 10 of their first 17 shots to open up a quick 26-13 advantage. Oladapo connected on the second of two free throws at the 6:23 mark to hand Pitt a 13-point cushion.

The Panthers extended the lead to 32-17 four minutes later when Odukale drove in for a layup to give Pitt its largest lead of the first half. Oladapo then banked in a floater in the lane with 16.7 seconds left in the half to lift Pitt to a 34-21 lead at intermission.

The Seahawks were limited to 28 percent shooting on 7-of-25 from the floor in the first 20 minutes - their lowest scoring output in the first half this season.

The Seahawks return home to entertain regional rival Coastal Carolina on Thursday in a 7 p.m. tip at Trask Coliseum.
