William & Mary Spoils Seahawks' Senior Night

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Junior forward Nathan Messer scored the game-winning goal in the 106th minute to give William & Mary a 2-1 double overtime victory over UNCW in Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer action at the UNCW Soccer Stadium on Saturday evening.

The win elevated the Tribe's record to 7-6-0 overall and 4-3-0 in the CAA. UNCW, meanwhile, dropped to 9-6-1 overall with an identical 4-3-0 mark in league play.

Messer gave William & Mary the victory with 4:47 remaining in the second overtime period with his fourth goal of the season. He made a long run down the sideline and eluded a UNCW defender before slipping a shot past junior goalkeeper Gabriel Perrotta.

UNCW jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute as fifth-year senior midfielder Jacob Evans sent a long outlet pass to junior forward Jalen Anderson, who scored on a shot inside the penalty area past junior Connor Andrews.

The Seahawks held the lead until the closing seconds of regulation when senior midfielder John Eberle sent a shot towards the goal that was deflected by a UNCW defender, marking his first tally of the season.

Perrotta made four saves in the loss for UNCW, which outshot William & Mary by a 13-9 margin. Andrews tallied three saves in the win for the Tribe.
