Rally Comes Up Short, Volleyhawks Fall In Five

WILMINGTON, N.C. – After rallying with a 25-21 in the fourth set to force a deciding fifth, UNCW saw its rally come up short, losing 15-13, as Northeastern gained a split of the Colonial Athletic Association series on Sunday at Hanover Hall.

The Huskies moved to 8-8 overall and 4-2 in the CAA while the Seahawks slipped to 2-13 and 1-3.

Northeastern overcame a loss in the first set, 25-20, to win sets two and three and taking a 2-1 lead.

In the fourth set though, Sarah Blakely, who finished with 10 kills, collected five kills in seven attacks to help the Seahawks draw even.

Katie Lanz led four Seahawks in double-figure kills with 16. Joining her were Brianna Haggerty and Kirsten Badowski with 12 and 10, respectively.

Lanz rounded out a double-double with 16 digs. Also fashioning double-doubles were Haggerty (16 digs) and Claire Sawyer. Sawyer doled a career-high in assists for a second straight match, handing out 51 assists. Those 51 helpers were the most by a Seahawk since 2017, when Brynn Montgomery had 53 at William & Mary.

Defensively, UNCW's Quinn Manley held match-high honors with a career-high 27 digs.

Erica Staunton of Northeastern finished with a match-high 17 kills while Nailah Jenkins chipped in 14 and committed just one hitting error in 26 attacks.

NU's Marika Virthe had nine blocks, including three solo.

The Seahawks continue their four-match homestand on Oct. 9-10 against Delaware.
