MOUNT PLEASANT, South Carolina – Junior forward
Cannon Tootle scored the game's only goal in the 44th minute as UNCW held off the College of Charleston to secure a 1-0 Colonial Athletic Association victory at Patriots Point on Saturday evening.
The win elevated the Seahawks' record to 9-5-1 overall and 4-2-0 in the CAA. Charleston, meanwhile, dipped to 4-6-3 and 1-5-1 against league opponents.
UNCW used quick passing in the closing minutes of the first half to take a one-goal lead. Graduate student defender
Dylan Sadler sent a pass into the penalty area that deflected off junior midfielder
Gabe Mercer and found Tootle, who knocked in his fourth goal of the season past senior goalkeeper
Cameron Smith.
The Cougars had their best chance to even the score in the 63rd minute when they awarded a penalty kick following a foul by redshirt senior defender
Drew Rabil in the penalty area. But, the attempt by senior midfielder Jake Nicholson was stopped by junior
Gabriel Perrotta to preserve the Seahawks' lead.
Perrotta, who authored his fifth shutout of the season, made two saves as the Seahawks limited Charleston to just four shots.
Smith tallied five shots in the loss for the Cougars, who lost for the fifth time in the last eight games.
UNCW completes the home portion of its regular season schedule on Saturday, Oct. 30, when the Seahawks welcome William & Mary for a 7 p.m. CAA contest. Charleston hosts Winthrop on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m.
