Volleyhawks Nail Down First CAA Win

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Behind 14 kills and 18 digs from Brianna Haggerty and a career-high 42 assists by Claire Sawyer, UNCW topped visiting Northeastern, 3-1 (26-24, 25-23, 19-25, 25-20), to earn its first Colonial Athletic Association victory on the season.

The Seahawks, who snapped an 11-match losing streak, improved to 2-12 and 1-2 in the league. The Huskies, meanwhile, dropped to 7-8 and 3-2.

Joining Haggerty in double-figure kills was Kirsten Badowski, who added five digs and match-high three blocks. For Haggerty, her 18 digs were a season high. Quinn Manley led the Seahawks with 20 digs and Sarah Knafelz had eight kills in 11 attacks.

Sawyer's previous career-high was 30 assists, set earlier this season against UNCG.

Haggerty's double-double was the third of the season and the sixth of her career.

Evelyn Gonzalez, who racked up seven kills in the third set, paced NU with 14 kills and Erica Staunton added 11.

UNCW opened the match with a pair of wins (26-24, 25-23) before the Huskies forced a fourth set with a 25-19 win. In the fourth set, Haggerty, Badowski and Brooke Hanshumaker combined for 10 of UNCW's 11 kills in the set as the Seahawks closed out the win with a 25-20 verdict.

In the opening set, Northeastern built a 20-15 lead before the Seahawks were able to draw even at 22-all on a kill from Badowski. The Huskies held a 24-22 lead with set point but committed a hitting error. That error allowed the Seahawks to finish off a 4-0 run to take the set.

Both teams battled in the second set, posting 15 tied scores and eight lead changes.

The teams continue the weekend series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start at Hanover Hall.
