RICHMOND, Virginia – Senior midfielder
Oquin Robinson scored the game-winning goal with just 32 seconds remaining in the first overtime period as VCU rallied to claim a 2-1 overtime victory against UNCW in non-conference men's soccer action at Sports Backers Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The Seahawks, who played their fifth consecutive overtime contest, dropped to 8-5-1 on the season while VCU improved to 9-4-1.
Robinson gave VCU the victory when he converted a free kick just outside the penalty area that sailed into the upper right corner of the goal. It was Robinson's third goal of the year.
UNCW took a 1-0 lead in the opening minutes of the second half when graduate student forward
Nicolas Molina netted his team-leading sixth goal of the season off a feed from junior forward
Cannon Tootle.
But, the Rams evened the score in the 67th minute when freshman midfielder
William Hitchcock tallied his third goal of the season on a shot to the bottom right corner of the goal past junior goalkeeper
Gabriel Perrotta.
Perrotta made five saves in the loss for UNCW, which outshot the Rams by a 13-7 margin.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper
John Ermini stopped two shots for the Rams, who won their second straight overtime contest.
UNCW returns to Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday, Oct. 23, when the Seahawks visit the College of Charleston for a 7 p.m. contest. VCU, meanwhile, hosts Fordham in Atlantic 10 Conference action on Saturday night.
