Hofstra Secures 72-59 Victory Over Seahawks

HEMPSTEAD, New York – Redshirt junior forward Jaylen Hines and junior guard JaKayla Brown each tallied 20 points to lead Hofstra to a 72-59 victory over UNCW in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action at the Mack Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.
 
Hofstra snapped a five-game losing streak with the victory while moving to 5-10 overall and 3-6 in the CAA. UNCW, meanwhile, dipped to 3-8 overall and 0-5 against league opponents.
 
Hines, who made 7-of-10 shots from the floor and 6-of-10 free throws, netted 13 of her 20 points in the second half while adding seven rebounds and three steals. Brown knocked down 8-of-19 field goal attempts and was perfect in three free throw tries while securing five rebounds.
 
Junior guard Jahsyni Knight chipped in 13 points and seven assists for the Pride, which shot 45.0 percent from the field.
 
UNCW junior guard Za'Nautica Downs came off the bench to lead all scorers with 23 points for her seventh double-digit scoring effort in a row. The Moultrie, Ga., product connected on 6-of-16 shots from the floor, including a 3-for-8 showing from beyond the arc, while sinking all eight of her free throws.
 
Senior forward Carol-Anne Obusek added her second straight double-double after scoring 18 points with a game-high 11 rebounds.
 
Key Moment: Trailing by a 22-21 margin, Hofstra closed out the first half with a 13-2 run to take a 34-24 lead into the intermission. The Pride continued to expand the advantage in the second half and led by as many as 20 points early in the fourth quarter en route to the victory.  
 
Game Notes:
  • Hofstra snapped a five-game losing streak in the series and now holds a slim 20-19 advantage over the Seahawks … It was the Pride's first win against UNCW since Jan. 7, 2018, a 69-61 triumph at Trask Coliseum … The Pride also secured their first win at home over UNCW since a 62-38 verdict on Feb. 19, 2016.
  • UNCW saw its losing streak extend to seven straight games with Saturday's setback … The Seahawks have held a lead in six of those seven contests.
  • Led by Downs, UNCW held a commanding 27-9 advantage over Hofstra in bench points … The Seahawks also matched a season high with their 27 bench points and have tallied at least 20 bench points in three consecutive games.
  • The Seahawks converted Hofstra's 21 turnovers into a season-high 20 points.
  • UNCW committed fewer personal fouls than its opponent for the 11th consecutive game.
  • Downs registered her third 20-point game of the season, including her second in the last three games.
  • Downs became the first UNCW player to make at least eight free throws without a miss since Feb. 12, 2015, when Naqaiyyah Teague went a perfect 8-for-8 at Elon.
  • Obusek tallied her fourth double-double of the season, including her third effort in the last four games … She has also reached double figures in scoring in three consecutive games.
