Obusek Leads Seahawks in Loss at Delaware

NEWARK, Delaware – Senior forward Carol-Anne Obusek registered her third double-double of the season, but it was not enough as UNCW dropped a 79-67 verdict against Colonial Athletic Association-leading Delaware in the weekend series finale at the Bob Carpenter Center on Sunday afternoon.
 
The win elevated the Blue Hens' record to 11-1 overall and 8-0 in the CAA while UNCW stands at 3-7 overall and 0-4 against league opponents.
 
Obusek paced the Seahawks with 18 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the field while grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds. The Cary, N.C., product also blocked a season-high five shots while playing 35 minutes.
 
Junior guard Za'Nautica Downs came off the bench to contribute 17 points while matching her season high with seven rebounds. Freshman guard Mary McMillan added 14 points with four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
 
Delaware, which won its eighth consecutive game, was led by junior guard Jasmine Dickey's 26 points and 11 rebounds. Dickey converted 7-of-16 shots from the floor and was 11-for-12 from the charity stripe en route to her fourth double-double of the season.
 
Redshirt junior forward Ty Battle also authored a double-double for the Blue Hens with 10 points and 10 rebounds while junior guard Jewel Smalls came off the bench to chip in 16 points and six rebounds.  
 
Key Moment: The Blue Hens, who never trailed in the contest, used 11 points from Dickey in the opening period to build a 21-12 lead. Delaware continued to add to its advantage and led by as many as 23 points in the fourth quarter.
 
Game Notes:
  • Delaware earned its third straight win over the Seahawks and upped its lead in the all-time series to 31-10 … The Blue Hens also earned their 11th straight home victory in the series.
  • The Seahawks and the Blue Hens combined to score 146 points in Sunday's game, marking the highest single-game output in the 41-game series. 
  • UNCW and Delaware combined to grab 99 rebounds, including 36 offensive caroms … The Blue Hens outrebounded the Seahawks by a 51-48 margin, marking the 11th time in 12 games they have held the edge on the boards this year.
  • After netting 27 points in the final frame on Saturday, UNCW erupted for 28 points in the fourth quarter on Sunday after going 12-for-21 from the field … The Seahawks outscored Delaware, 55-38, in the fourth quarter this weekend while going 19-for-32 (.594) from the field.
  • The Seahawks scored a season-high 40 points in the paint against Delaware on Sunday … UNCW finished the weekend with 74 of its 133 points scored in the paint.
  • Obusek has scored in double figures in eight of her nine games this season … She also registered her fourth double-digit rebounding effort of the year.
  • In two games against the Blue Hens this weekend, Obusek shot 46.4 percent from the field (13-of-28) while averaging 15.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game … She also had five of the Seahawks' seven blocked shots.
  • Downs extended her streak of consecutive double-digit scoring efforts to six games after netting 17 points on Sunday … During the streak, she has averaged 18.5 points per game.
  • Led by Downs, the Seahawks made 16-of-21 free throws against Delaware on Sunday … In two games this weekend against the Blue Hens, UNCW shot 74.5 percent from the field (41-for-55) … Downs finished the weekend converting 21-of-26 chances at the foul line.
  • Sophomore forward Sunshine McCrae grabbed a career-high six rebounds while contributing four points in a career-high 14 minutes.
