WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Senior
Dominique Travers hit a two-run double with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift UNCW past North Dakota and earn a split of its doubleheader at the UNCW Softball Invitational at Boseman Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Seahawks, who ran their record to 7-15 on the season, edged North Dakota by a 3-2 margin in the nightcap after dropping a 14-6 verdict against Georgetown to open the day.
Travers and sophomore
Janel Gamache each recorded three hits in the twinbill to pace the Seahawks' offensive attack. Travers went 3-for-7 with a double and home run while driving in four runs. Gamache, meanwhile, was 3-for-6 with a solo home run.
Three other UNCW players tallied two hits in the doubleheader split as the Seahawks banged out 15 hits.
Senior
Rylee Pate secured the victory in the circle against North Dakota, not allowing an earned run while scattering three hits in a complete game effort. The Mount Olive, N.C., product also fashioned eight strikeouts.
Key Moment vs. Georgetown: After falling behind by a 3-2 margin in the first inning, Georgetown scored four unanswered runs over the next three frames to take a 6-3 lead the Hoyas did not relinquish. UNCW closed the margin to 6-5 in the sixth inning with a pair of unearned runs, but Georgetown secured the win by scoring eight runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Key Moment vs. North Dakota: Trailing by a 2-1 margin in the bottom of the seventh inning, UNCW earned the victory when Travers hit a two-run double to right center field with one out in the frame.
