ATHENS, Georgia – Redshirt freshman Jaiden Fields and sophomore Lacey Fincher each collected two hits as No. 16 Georgia remained unbeaten after posting an 8-0 victory over UNCW in five innings at the Red and Black Showcase on Saturday evening.
The Bulldogs upped their record to 3-0 on the season while the Seahawks dipped to 1-2 after their second loss in a row.
Fields, who entered the game as a pinch hitter in the first inning, went 2-for-2 with a triple and three runs batted in. Fincher, meanwhile, added a 2-for-3 showing with an RBI and a run scored.
Junior Lauren Mathis earned her second win in the circle after scattering just two hits in a complete game effort with 10 strikeouts.
Sophomores
Janel Gamache and
Taylor Smith each posted a hit in the loss for the Seahawks.
How It Happened: Georgia erupted for four runs in the first inning, including a bases-loaded triple by Fields, to take a 4-0 lead. The Bulldogs added a single run in the fourth inning before two more runs in the fifth.
Notes of Interest:
- The Seahawks' game against Howard, which was scheduled for Saturday, was canceled after inclement weather forced the schedule to be altered … It will not be made up.
- Georgia improved to 6-0 all-time against the Seahawks.
- Smith is the only UNCW player to record a hit in each of the Seahawks' first three games this season.
- Gamache, Smith and junior Anna Knox have reached base safely in all three games … While Gamache and Smith each registered a hit against Georgia, Knox reached base with a walk in the second inning.
- Freshman Morgan Britt made her college debut in Saturday's game against Georgia.
