ATHENS, Georgia – Sophomore
Janel Gamache blasted her second home run of the season, but it was not enough as No. 16 Georgia handed UNCW a 10-2 setback in the final game of the Red and Black Showcase at Jack Turner Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The win allowed the Bulldogs to increase their record to 4-0 while UNCW finished the opening weekend of the season with a 1-3 mark.
Gamache gave the Seahawks a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when she belted a two-run home run to center field for her second home run of the season.
Sophomores
Casey Jones and
Logan Bjorson accounted for the Seahawks' other hits in the loss.
Senior Ciara Bryan and junior Mackenzie Puckett each hit a three-run home run to lead Georgia.
How It Happened: Georgia overcame a 2-0 deficit by scoring 10 unanswered runs, including nine runs over a two-inning span. The Bulldogs exploded for six runs in the fourth inning, including a three-run home run by Fields, before adding three more runs in the fifth.
Notes of Interest:
- Georgia upped its record to 7-0 all-time against the Seahawks after earning a pair of victories this weekend.
- Gamache was the only UNCW player to reach base safely in all four games this weekend … The Exeter, R.I., product finished the first weekend of the season with a .500 average (5-for-10) with two home runs and five runs batted in.
- Gamache led the Seahawks with five hits in the tournament while sophomore Logan Bjorson added four hits with a .333 average.
- Sophomore Taylor Smith saw an end to her three-game hitting streak in Sunday's weekend finale.
