Roupp Tosses Gem As UNCW Takes Series

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Junior Landen Roupp and sophomore Adam Smith combined on a three-hit shutout as UNCW earned a series win on Saturday against Kentucky with a 3-0 win at Kentucky Proud Park.

The Seahawks, who fashioned consecutive shutouts for the first time since 2014, improved to 8-3 while the Wildcats dropped their second straight to fall to 5-5.

Roupp (3-0) scattered two hits and four walks over seven shutout innings for the win and he lowered his earned run average to 0.47 on the season. Smith pitched the final two innings, striking out three for his team-leading third save of the season.

Offensively, Jackson Meadows, making his first start of the season, collected two hits and scored a run. Matt Suggs plated two runs on an error in the outfield in the fifth to close out the scoring.

Kentucky starter Mason Hazelwood (1-1) was saddled with the loss despite striking out nine over seven innings of work.

Up next: The Seahawks and Wildcats close out their series with another 1 p.m. start on Sunday.

Scoring:
T3: Zachary Bridges singled through a drawn-in infield to score Meadows with one out and give UNCW a 1-0 lead.
T5: Suggs sent a fly ball down the right field line that was misplayed, allowing Kip Brandenburg, who tripled, and Zachary Bridges, who reached on an error, to score for a 3-0 lead.

Inside the box score: The last time UNCW tossed consecutive shutouts was during the 2014 season against Campbell (Apr. 8) and NC Central (Apr. 9) … Cole Weiss extended his hitting streak to five games with a fourth inning single … Brandenburg now has three triples on the season … The Seahawks turned a pair of double plays … Both teams landed their leadoff hit on base four times … UK was hitless (0-7) with runners in scoring position.
