Seahawks Finish Off Wildcats For Sweep


LEXINGTON, Ky. – Four Seahawks collected two hits apiece as UNCW ran out to a five-run lead in the second inning on its way to a 7-4 win over Kentucky to finish a series week on Sunday at Kentucky Proud Park.

The Seahawks, who went 3-1 for the third consecutive week, upped their record to 9-3 with the sweep of Kentucky, who fell to 5-6 on the season.

Luke Gesell (2-1) earned the win, striking out a season-high six over five innings of work. Breydan Gorham followed with three shutout innings out of the bullpen and Blake Deatherage closed out the game with his second save of the season.

The quartet of Kip Brandenburg, Trevor Marsh, Zachary Bridges and Brooks Baldwin combined for eight hits six runs scored and five driven in.  Marsh doubled twice and Brandenburg connect on his first home run as a Seahawk.

Oraj Anu collected a game-high three hits for the Wildcats while Austin Schultz and TJ Collett hit back-to-back homers in a three-run third inning.

UK starter Zack Lee (0-1) was roughed up by the Seahawks, allowing five runs on seven hits in 1.1 innings.

Up next: The Seahawks open an eight-game homestand on Mar. 4 against North Carolina Central. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.

Scoring:
T2: Marsh doubles to right center scoring Brandenburg, who doubled and Jac Croom for a 2-0 lead … Baldwin followed with an RBI single and Suggs added another RBI single, two batters later … Weiss made it 5-0 with a squeeze bunt.
B3: Schultz homered with a man on and Collett followed with a solo shot to make it 5-3 UNCW.
T6: Baldwin singled through a drawn-in infield, scoring Marsh for a 6-3 lead.
B6: Rhodes singled in Shelby to narrow UNCW's lead to 6-4.
T7: UNCW got that run back on a solo homer to left by Brandenburg, 7-4 UNCW.

Inside the box score: Weiss singled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to six games … Seahawk pitching held UK to just four runs on the weekend and compiled a 1.33 ERA for the series … It was UNCW's first series win against an SEC member … Brandenburg has eight hits on the season with six going for extra bases (2 doubles, three triples and a home run) … UNCW is now 3-2 on the road this season.
