Sharpe, Roupp Dominant In Doubleheader Sweep


WILMINGTON, N.C. – Backed by a pair of dominant starts from Zarion Sharpe and Landen Roupp, UNCW knocked off both Bowling Green and Marshall by scores of 5-2 and 8-1, respectively, on Saturday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks improved to 5-2 on the season while Bowling Green and Marshall slipped to 1-4 and 0-5, respectively.

Sharpe (1-0) struck out eight and walked one over seven no-hit innings to pick up the win against Bowling Green. He carried a perfect game into the seventh before a one out walk ended it.

Blake Deatherage picked up the save by striking out five over the final two innings.

Pinch hitter Trent Farquhar broke up the no-hit bid leading off the ninth inning with an infield hit.

Tanner Wells drove in three runs on three hits in the opener for the Seahawks.

Roupp (2-0) won his second straight start to open the season. The righthander allowed one run on five hits and a walk while striking out seven in six innings of work.

UNCW broke the game open with eight runs in the middle three innings.

Kip Brandenburg drove in four runs, including three on a bases loaded triple in the fourth. He drove in six runs on the day.

Tyler Hays (0-2) took the loss for BGSU in game one and Brady Choban (0-2) was tagged with the loss in the Marshall game.

Up next: The Seahawks close out the weekend with a 3 p.m. start on Sunday against Marshall. UNCW then kicks off a four-game roads wing on Feb. 25 at nationally ranked NC State.

Inside the box score: Seahawk pitching allowed just two leadoff hitters to reach safely on the afternoon … In game two, UNCW plated all four runners from third base with less than two out … UNCW finished 7-for-18 (.389) with RISP … Noah Bridges collected his team-leading fifth two-hit game of the season in game one … He also raised his stolen base total to seven with two on the day.
