Diamond Hawks Dump Herd, 8-6


WILMINGTON, N.C.Noah Bridges, Jac Croom and Trevor Marsh each had three hits as UNCW finished off a sweep of the Hughes Bros. Challenge on Sunday with an 8-6 win over Marshall at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks ran their record to 6-2 while the Herd stumbled to 1-6 after going 1-3 on the weekend.

Bridges, Croom and Marsh each had three hits as UNCW built a 7-0 lead after four innings. The Seahawks also drew eight walks and took advantage of 10 wild pitches by the Marshall pitching staff.

UNCW starter Luke Gesell (1-1) earned the win with five innings of work and Adam Smith nailed down his second save of the season with two innings of hitless relief, retiring all six batters he faced.

MU's Jaren Lovely collected three hits, including his first career home run, and scored twice.

Starter Ryan Capuano (0-1) lasted just 2.2 innings in taking the loss.

Up next: The Seahawks visit nationally ranked NC State for a 4 p.m. start on Feb. 25.

How it happened: The Seahawks struck for six runs in the third inning to take a 7-0 lead. With two out, Croom ignited the outburst with a single. Marsh and Bridges had RBI hits in the inning and Brooks Baldwin capped it with a two-run single to center. Eleven batters made their way to the plate in the inning for UNCW.

Inside the box score: The Seahawks had base runners in every inning and stranded at least two runners in seven of those innings … UNCW landed its leadoff hitter in base safely in five innings … Bridges and Baldwin both had two, two-out RBIs … 16 hits were a season-high for UNCW … Bridges now has six multi-hit games on the season … Relievers Nick Bruno and Smith combined to retire the last 11 Herd hitters to end the game.
