WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Sophomore
Gabriella Hessenthaler collected two hits and drove in two runs, but Brown scored nine unanswered runs to ruin UNCW's home opener as the Bears collected a 12-3 victory at the Seahawk Softball Classic at Boseman Field on Friday afternoon.
The Bears won their season opener while the Seahawks dropped to 1-9 on the season.
Hessenthaler went 2-for-3 with each of her hits driving in a run. She gave the Seahawks a 1-0 lead in the second inning when she hit a single through the right side before adding a RBI single to right field in the fourth inning.
In addition, Hessenthaler also scored the Seahawks' other run when she stole home in the second inning.
Sophomore Lauren Innerst led Brown to the victory by going 4-for-5 with a double and two runs batted in.
How It Happened: After UNCW evened the score at 3-3 in the fourth inning, Brown erupted for nine runs over the next three innings to earn the victory. The Bears scored four times in the fifth and seventh innings while adding a run in the sixth inning.
Up Next: UNCW continues play with two more games at the Seahawk Softball Classic on Saturday, Feb. 22. The Seahawks will face Brown at 10 a.m. before taking on George Washington at 12:30 p.m.
