WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW's 19 intercollegiate sports programs will take the day off on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020, to allow the school's 350 student-athletes to participate in Election Day.
"This will give all of our student-athletes time to exercise their right to vote and have their voices heard," said
Jimmy Bass, UNCW's athletic director. "We always want our student-athletes to be good citizens first. We encourage all of our student-athletes, coaches and staff to take part in the democratic process that day."
The UNCW Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is completing a two-day voter registration drive on campus. In addition, several teams are exploring ways to assist first-hand with the election process.
"I think it's incredibly important," said senior volleyball standout Kyla Augustine. "You are influencing your own future by registering to vote and voting in each election. It influences your everyday life even more than you realize sometimes."
Earlier this summer, the NCAA encouraged its 1,100 member colleges and universities to give student-athletes the day off from sports on Election Day
