Charleston Downs Seahawks in Overtime

CHARLESTON, South Carolina – UNCW forced overtime by scoring the final seven points of regulation, but the Seahawks were unable to complete the comeback as the College of Charleston escaped with a 67-63 victory in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action at TD Arena on Sunday afternoon.

The loss dropped the Seahawks' record to 5-13 overall and 2-5 in the CAA. Charleston, meanwhile, improved to 10-8 overall and 3-4 in league play after ending a four-game losing streak.

Sophomore guard Tyler Collins anchored three Charleston players in double figures with 15 points after making 4-of-7 shots from the field along with a 6-for-8 showing at the free throw line.

Freshman guard Taylor Williams came off the bench to add 14 points with six rebounds while senior guard Deja Ford contributed 11 points and seven rebounds.

UNCW, which dropped its fourth game in a row, was led by senior guard Lacey Suggs, who scored 17 points with five rebounds. The White Lake, N.C., product made 6-of-11 field goal attempts in addition to a perfect 4-for-4 effort from the free throw line.

Senior guard Ahyiona Vason tallied 13 points with five rebounds while redshirt senior guard GiGi Smith had 12 points with seven rebounds and a career-high seven assists.

Key Moment: After Suggs hit two free throws to give UNCW a 62-60 lead with 4:13 remaining in the extra session, Charleston scored five straight points, including four points from Collins, to claim a 65-62 advantage the Cougars did not relinquish with 1:49 left.

  • Suggs, who played a career-high 45 minutes, tallied her 13th double-digit scoring effort of the season and led the Seahawks in scoring for the sixth time this season.
  • Smith recorded her 16th double-digit scoring performance in 18 games this year … The Norfolk, Va., guard also set a career high by playing 44 minutes.
